Founded by parents in 1967, the Lycée Français La Pérouse is an academic institution accredited by the State of California and the French Ministry of Education. It belongs to a network of over 400 French schools worldwide and receives substantial financial support from the French Government. The Lycée offers a preschool through 12th grade education to French, American and students of other cultures.
The Lycée is an American private school with a French public school curriculum. Lycée Français La Pérouse is run by the parents, with financial responsibility residing in the Board of Directors, elected from among parents and other community leaders. Pedagogical direction, however, is provided by the Agence pour l'Enseignement Français à l'Etranger (Agency for International French Education) under the guidance of the French Ministry of Education.
Our mission is unique, as is the cultural diversity of our student population. This produces a blend of structures and traditions particular to our school.
Facilities
The Lycée has three campuses, two in San Francisco and one in Marin County, a twenty minute drive north of the Golden Gate Bridge. In April 2006, the Lycée purchased the Conservatory of Music of San Francisco which accomodates the Middle and High school since September 2007.
The newly renovated San Francisco campus in the Ashbury Heights neighborhood of San Francisco houses the Lycée's administrative offices, and has classes from preschool through 12th grade. The 4-story building has two enclosed playgrounds, an auditorium, library, two computer labs separate shower rooms, kitchen, multi-purpose room, two new fully-equipped science labs, and a gymnastics room for exclusive use by the preschool classes. The Internet is in every classroom.
The Marin campus, in the town of Corte Madera, is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. It is surrounded by green parks with open-space hiking trails nearby. There are three playgrounds, a gymnasium, enclosed gardens and soccer, baseball, basketball and volleyball grounds adjacent to the school. The campus features a music studio, computer lab, and a bilingual library/videotheque. Students can attend preschool through 5th grade on the Marin campus.
The Lycée was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by a group of French parents and teachers to provide a total immersion French education program adhering to the highly respected curriculum of France's national education system. Classes were originally held in the basement of the Orthodox Church on Geary Street, then in its early years at U.C. Extension, at Fort Mason, and eventually in our own building on Balboa Street (until we outgrew it). In 1986, The French School of Marin merged with the Lycée, adding a Marin County campus with preschool through 5th grade. In 1995 Lycée Français La Pérouse purchased the building at 755 Ashbury Street in San Francisco, where we now have our administrative headquarters and offer preschool through 12th grade. There are currently more than 880 students on three campuses (one in in Marin and two in San Francisco). Lycée Français La Pérouse is fully accredited in the U.S. Our students earn an American high school diploma, as well as prepare for the French Baccalauréat which qualifies them to attend European universities.
True to its founding principles, the Lycée strives to maintain an international community of teachers, parents and students of diverse social and cultural backgrounds. The school strongly encourages the active participation and involvement of its parents and staff in all aspects of the school's life.
The Lycée provides a challenging educational environment, emphasizing academic achievement leading to the French Baccalaureate. Our program is based on the French national curriculum augmented by courses in American History, English Literature and Visual Arts. Designed to provide our students with a structured, well-assimilated body of general knowledge while encouraging the development of an alytical and critical thinking skills, the curriculum fosters autonomy, initiative, self-respect and the respect of others, cooperation and responsibility. In addition, by becoming bilingual, our students become aware of and respect cultural differences. They are consequently able to make informed choices about their future and are prepared for success in tomorrow's world.
The Lycée students have access to all other French schools at their own grade level. As a result of the high quality English curriculum, they are also qualified to enter an American school at or above their grade level, and are fully prepared to enter European or North American colleges and universities.
